After more than 20 years, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is making a comeback! Released way back in 2002, this game follows Onimusha: Warlords — maybe you’ve heard of it? If you haven’t, no biggie. This time, we have a new hero in town: Jubei Yagyu. He’s a samurai on a revenge mission. Classic, right?
So, fast forward 10 years from the original’s storyline, and wouldn’t you know it — that demon dude Nobunaga Oda is back, trying to snatch up all of Japan. He starts with Yagyu Village, as villains do because hey, why not? Jubei gets home to find it in shambles. What else is a samurai to do but to set things right? Along the way, he bumps into four potential pals who can join his journey. You gotta butter them up with gifts though. Pick the right ones, and who knows? They might let you see different endings.
In the game, you find gifts all over. Like, in shops or lying around. Weird, yes, but just roll with it. Each ally has their gift preferences, kind of like real-life friends. Give enough good stuff and — surprise! — they might be playable for a section of the game. I asked some folks at Capcom about their favorite gift reactions, and here’s the scoop.
Let’s talk Ekei Ankokuji. He’s this monk who, spoiler alert, is into money, booze, and women. You’d think a monk wouldn’t be, but life’s full of surprises, huh? Give him a huqin, and the guy’s all in for entertaining you with a dance. Not what you’d expect from a monk, right?
Magoichi Saiga, on the other hand, is a gun chief, and get this, he loves books. Give him a book, though, and he’s like, “Nah, man, I want the whole set.” Maybe just wait until you have more?
Now, how about Kotaro Fuma. Young ninja, kind of a sass-master. You try to gift him something like a Tengu mask thinking he might appreciate the historical element, and he’s all, “Old people stuff, dude.” Makes Jubei feel all awkward.
Then there’s Oyu, mysterious and armored. Gifts make her uneasy. Give her The Art of War and watch that eyebrow twitch as she politely thanks you but definitely doesn’t mean it.
Here’s a fun thing: the guy Magoichi again. If you give him raw fish and wasabi in the right order, he lights up. Who would’ve thunk it?
Eshiro, the director, has this fave interaction — give Ekei anything hair-related, like a comb or hair oil, and see how fast a monk gets grumpy. It’s pure gold.
Anyway, there’s more to discover in Onimusha 2. Try different gifts, watch the reactions, and you might figure out your own favorite moments. Experiment, fail, succeed, rinse and repeat. That’s the way of a gamer, or so they tell me. Dive back into this saga on Xbox One or Series X|S. Reclaim your destiny! Whatever that means…
