Nintendo Discusses Switch 2 Compatibility with GameCube Controllers for Various Games

Nintendo has recently shared some insights on the compatibility of the Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller. They’ve indicated that although this new wireless GameCube controller will work seamlessly with the Nintendo Classics app for GameCube games, players might face some challenges when it comes to using it for other games. The controller, which was showcased during the April 2 Nintendo Direct, brings a sense of nostalgia with its iconic design. However, its functionality outside the supported GameCube titles remains limited, as highlighted by Nintendo.

Currently, Nintendo Switch Online offers two subscription tiers. For $19.99 annually, subscribers get a variety of classic games from consoles like the NES, SNES, and Game Boy alongside online multiplayer support. The pricier option, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, priced at $49.99, not only bundles the foundational Nintendo Switch Online services but also adds free downloadable content for games like Splatoon 2 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In addition, this tier grants access to timeless titles from the Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Genesis. Excitingly, those who opt for the Expansion Pack will be able to dive into GameCube classics on the Nintendo Switch 2 right from launch. Speaking further with Nintendo Life, a company representative acknowledged potential functional limitations of the GameCube controller on the Switch 2. Meant primarily for the Nintendo Classics app compatibility, this controller lacks the full button range and features seen in other Switch 2 controllers. Therefore, players might encounter some hurdles when branching out to other titles. Furthermore, Nintendo has clarified that this GameCube controller is exclusive to the Switch 2 system and will not work with the original Nintendo Switch.

For those enthusiasts who miss the original GameCube experience, there’s some good news. You’ll be able to use wired GameCube controllers on the Switch 2 by using the GameCube Controller Adapter. Both the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con and the Pro Controller will also work with the Switch 2, but similar to the GameCube controller, they could face compatibility challenges with newer functionalities.

Nintendo continues its trend of regularly adding classic titles to the Switch Online service, a tradition that will carry on with evergreen enthusiasm post the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.
