While War Thunder’s extensive collection of tanks, planes, and battleships typically stems from the post-WWII era, this fresh limited-time event takes players even further back. Known as ‘The Great War,’ this event immerses you in the Western Front of WWI, introducing a variety of era-specific ground and air vehicles.
Seven newly introduced vehicles have been added, available for unlocking by completing stages on behalf of both the Allies—Britain, France, and the USSR—and the German Empire. This event stretches over five days, and once you unlock these vehicles, they’re yours to use in other War Thunder modes beyond the event’s duration.
In addition to the new ground vehicles, there are bonus air vehicles that, while accessible, remain locked beyond this event. Both factions can command a bomber plane, and there are also colossal zeppelins you can helm to unleash immense payloads on the battlefield.
However, WWI-era machines aren’t the only fresh aspect here. This event is the stage for a debut feature—infantry. AI-controlled soldiers will now be seen leaping from trenches and charging enemy lines. They’re not just a cosmetic addition; these troops are armed with grenades to confront enemy vehicles, presenting a genuine threat instead of simply providing a new target for tank cannons.
Gaijin hints at a “large-scale closed beta test for infantry” on the horizon, with ‘The Great War’ acting as a preview of how these units might shift War Thunder’s gameplay dynamics.
Players have long called for infantry in War Thunder, even though the game traditionally emphasized vehicles. It’s exciting to see it finally come to fruition, even if it’s humorously—or anxiety-inducingly—tied to a WWI-themed April Fool’s event. If this turns out to be a sophisticated joke, solely for this event, Gaijin might find themselves addressing quite a few disgruntled fans—and at least one annoyed gaming journalist!
