Alright, so here’s the deal. I plopped myself down in front of the screen with a snack in hand, ready to watch the Borderlands 4 State of Play like someone stepping into a comfy pair of slippers. You ever get that feeling? Anyway. It was jam-packed with juicy morsels of info—like, seriously more than I expected. Made me think more of a Destiny 3 vibe than the classic hit I had in mind. Maybe it was a curveball, but it feels like the right swing for this series.
Now, Borderlands, it’s got this rep, right? On one hand, you’ve got this killer FPS action—like, guns that shoot all kinds of bizarre crap and whatnot. That’s what sucked me and thousands of others in from the start. Even way back with Borderlands 1, it was this wild, untamed beast. Simple times.
So, there’s this peculiar humor thing going on, too. And hey, I’ve seen folks who dig Claptrap and the madcap humor—like a twisted SpongeBob or something in that Krieg bit from Borderlands 3, right? But then again, some folks probably felt like it was all just “meh.” Gearbox clearly spotted this as a window for some big changes, and boy, did they dive right in.
Okay, humor first. Wasn’t drowning in jokes like before. Characters just dropped a couple of lines here and there. Remember when everyone thought Borderlands 4 was gonna be joke central? Total relief that’s uncertain now. It’s like a new beast altogether.
And this visual vibe… still got that Borderlands edge but toned down. Like someone turned down the whacky meter just a tad. Exploring and tracking down those vaults sounds more Bungie-esque now. Dynamic bosses and events? Sounds fresh! Vaults are dungeons now? That’s gutsy! Oh, and a drone that nudges you to your next quest—it’s Destiny 2 whispers! A mishmash of Destiny influences and classic Gearbox flair. Wild!
Seems like an oddball move, but right now, with Bungie sidetracked with Marathon and Destiny 2 losing steam… nah, this timing feels kinda savvy. Destiny’s been a bit of a locked door for newbies, and all those layoffs, yep, not good vibes there. Marathon, though, it’s got folks on the fence. Before this, you’d think Borderlands’ timing was a shrewd play—Pitchford said it wasn’t, but who knows, right? Now it feels like the right call. Imagine if Borderlands 4 and Marathon dropped on the same day? Pfft! Borderlands would’ve probably stolen the show.
These thoughts keep bouncing ’round my noggin, and honestly, feeling pretty stoked about where Borderlands 4 is heading. Who knows if that buzz will taper off, but for now, it’s got heads turning. Nice move, Gearbox!
