Oh man, here we go again with Sega, dropping some juicy Virtua Fighter tidbits. Seriously, they just announced something big is coming — or at least that’s what they’re teasing for this Sunday, May 11. Probably coinciding with Evo Japan’s last day. You know, those things they post about on their official Virtua Fighter YouTube? Yeah, that.
So, word on the street is — well, not really the street, more like Sega’s vague mumblings — they’re gonna share some “new developments” in the series during what they call the VF Direct. I mean, that’s what they’re saying for now.
What’s funny, or maybe a bit weird, is that Sega yanked the news off social media. Why? They promote YouTube channels that are nowhere near up yet. Plus, nobody knows what time this VF Direct thing even kicks off.
Maybe they’ll finally spill the beans on the highly anticipated Virtua Fighter 6. Or not. Could be another rehash of VF5. I can totally see them doing something wild, like running it on a smart fridge. It seems everything’s an Xbox these days. They’re tight-lipped, so who knows if they accidentally dropped hints or are just trolling us all.
Anyway, Sega’s still being a bit mysterious. But they did get back to Polygon, at least. Said something about the post deletion — yep, the show’s still on for Sunday, no worries. Apparently, they’ll update with a new post by Friday evening. So I guess stay on your toes for that. Maybe don’t hold your breath, though. Just sayin’.
Might as well tune in for updates when Sega actually decides to spill the VF Direct deets. Who knows?
Taking a nostalgia trip, the original Virtua Fighter blew everyone’s mind back in ’93. Yeah, ’93. Wild, right? It was the first 3D fighting game that actually made a splash. Kind of set the pace for all 3D fighters after that. Pretty groundbreaking stuff.
Virtua Fighter made quite a name for itself, defining a more grounded, skill-based play style. It even rubbed off on games like Tekken and Dead or Alive. And some others that didn’t quite make it, like Fighter’s Destiny — which was actually kinda cool, let’s be real.
Last time Sega gave us something fresh in the VF franchise was in 2006. Virtua Fighter 5, remember that? Started on the Lindbergh arcade system, then jumped to PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2007. They’ve been tweaking it for what feels like forever. The latest version, VF5 REVO, is chilling on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X. Still not on your fridge dashboard, though.
Oh, and don’t forget the 2024 Video Game Awards. They teased VF6 there, showing off some new artsy vibes. Some old characters got new looks. Akira was looking pretty slick, if you ask me.
And there you have it. Not much else to say, except we’ll see what unfolds this Sunday. Maybe.
