It seems like the seasoned fans of the Elder Scrolls franchise—pretty much everyone I work with—have been in celebration mode with the recent Oblivion Remake stream and spontaneous release. Meanwhile, those of us anticipating what’s on the horizon can take comfort in knowing that Todd Howard has reminded us that The Elder Scrolls 6 is indeed still in development. He even mentioned that the team is actively working on it.
Before diving into all the juicy updates about the Oblivion Remaster, Howard stated, “obviously we’re working on the 6th chapter here.” Now that’s a bit of news we’ve been starving for since March 2024, when Bethesda disclosed that test versions of ES6 were circulating among testers. There were even hints that the game is, as you’d hope, actually fun.
Prior to this, we had a sizzling update from a former Skyrim designer, who suggested we wouldn’t hear more about ES6 until just six months before its release. That bit of news came around October 2023. Then, a month earlier, Phil Spencer hilariously speculated that ES6 was still about five years away. Fast forward nearly two years, and we still don’t have much to chew on.
In terms of solid updates from Bethesda, there’s been barely a peep. Back in August 2023, they mentioned that development was underway—a whopping five years after the E3 announcement. Is it just me, or did they jump the gun a bit with that early announcement?
Jokes and sarcasm aside, it’s heartening to catch even a whisper of progress on Elder Scrolls 6. It feels like an eternity; when they first announced it, I was still in school, and now I’m sorting out adult life, juggling bills, vices, and dating apps. Bethesda is renowned as a top-tier developer of first-person RPGs, so I’ve no doubt they’ll create something brilliant. But seriously, could they share a sketch or something? At this point, Liam Neeson had more evidence of his daughter’s existence in “Taken” than we have for this game’s progress.
I’m curious—do you still feel a spark of excitement, and just how much student debt do you think I’ll rack up by the time Elder Scrolls 6 finally drops? Let us know your thoughts!
