Modder Transforms PlayStation 4 Slim into a Handheld Console

YouTuber Restore Technique recently wowed us with a deep dive into his latest creation: a handheld PlayStation 4. This impressive feat, showcased in a 27-minute video, demonstrates how he converted a PlayStation 4 Slim into a portable gaming device. Using a custom 3D-printed shell, bespoke circuit boards, and a 7-inch screen, he has successfully brought the world a true handheld PS4. Measuring 249 x 156 x 49.2 mm and weighing 1.7 kg, some enthusiasts might argue that this DIY project is a worthy successor to the PlayStation Vita, especially when compared to the streaming-only PlayStation Portal.

Unlike modders who often opt for less powerful Nintendo systems like the GameCube or Wii, Restore Technique chose to modify a PlayStation 4, which is a much more demanding undertaking. The modder didn’t stop at just the console; he also incorporated a DualShock controller, cleverly rerouting its test points to fit the handheld design. And to power his creation, he custom-built a 10,000 mAh 3S2P LiPo battery pack. This robust energy source is charged through an upgraded DC power jack, able to handle simultaneous charging and gaming, while DC buck converters manage the necessary voltage levels.

In the video, Restore Technique gives us a taste of the gaming experience, showcasing gameplay from The Last of Us, which lasts an impressive 86 minutes. However, he advises that it’s best enjoyed when plugged in due to its hefty power consumption. There’s also a practical downside—the powerful battery setup means you’re unlikely to get this gizmo past airport security.

Alongside these technical feats, the detailed video walks through the development of the PS4T shell. Initially, it was created using FDM 3D printing, eventually moving to a final resin version produced by PCBWay, which better withstands the heat generated by the PlayStation 4 Slim’s internals.

Early tests with the PS4T didn’t go off without a hitch; some titles suffered from graphical glitches and slowdowns. However, with perseverance and some technical tweaks—like new controller frames, improved electric shielding, and enhanced heat management—Restore Technique optimized the console for a stable performance.
