Official XR Game Based on ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ Set to Launch First Installment in 2026

Pixelity, a gaming studio from Korea, is diving into the world of XR gaming with a new project based on the iconic anime from the ’90s, Neon Genesis Evangelion.

In a recent blog post, Pixelity shared that they’ve teamed up with Japan’s Studio Khara through an official licensing agreement to bring this immersive experience to life. The game is set to roll out in three parts, drawing from the full saga of the anime’s 26 episodes. Excitingly, the first part is already in the works, with a planned release in 2026.

For those of us who have been long-time fans of Evangelion, the anime’s history is well-known. It became a cultural touchstone in the 1990s, playing a significant role in the anime’s resurgence in Japan and leaving a lasting impact that inspired countless other anime series.

Taking place in the then-futuristic year of 2015—envisioned two decades ahead of its original 1995 release—the story follows Shinji Ikari, chosen to pilot the Evangelion, a humanoid combat vehicle. These machines are humanity’s last hope against the mysterious Angels attacking Tokyo-3.

While specific platforms haven’t been revealed just yet, players can look forward to exploring various locations through the lens of an immersive XR experience. The game will trace the timeline and events of the anime, challenging players with missions and dynamic battles along the way.

According to the studio, "The game will feature collaboration play elements where players interact with various characters from Evangelion," a feature that is sure to appeal to longtime fans. Pixelity is committed to delivering a high-energy experience typical of the action-adventure genre.

Since its founding in 2017, Pixelity has carved out a niche by developing VR titles such as Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). They’re also currently developing two other VR projects, The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.

This new venture isn’t Evangelion’s first foray into the world of VR, but it is noteworthy as the first official at-home game adaptation. Back in 2017, Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls was a four-player experience available at VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan, spearheaded by Bandai Namco’s VR studio, Project i Can. However, that was a limited-time offering, unlike Pixelity’s upcoming project, which fans can enjoy from home.
