I’m excited to share that we’re diving into a review of Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island. In light of that, I had the chance to chat with Alex Kanaris-Sotiriou, who co-founded Polygon Treehouse, to gather his insights about the game. Let’s delve into our conversation!

PS4Blog: Good morning, Alex! It’s great to have you back with us on PS4Blog. How have things been?

Alex: Thanks for having me! It’s been an exhilarating few years since we released our indie game Röki. With Mythwrecked, I’ve enjoyed peeking into folklore and mythology from a fresh perspective. Unlike Röki, which drew heavily from Scandinavian tales, Mythwrecked takes a twist, imagining what the Greek gods would be like if they existed in our modern world. It’s been a fascinating journey!

PS4B: So, Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island is making its way to the Nintendo Switch on December 5. What’s this new journey all about?

Alex: We like to think of Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island as an ‘explore-o-story’ game. You step into the shoes of Alex, a backpacker in search of some escape from the hustle and bustle, only to have a sudden storm disrupt your plans, leaving you stranded on an ancient island. Your quest will involve forging friendships with the Greek gods, piecing together their forgotten memories, and figuring out how to get back home.

PS4B: When did you kick off this project, and how did the vision shift from your initial concept to the final version we’ll soon be playing?

Alex: It’s hard to believe it’s been about three years since we started brainstorming the idea. The initial concept was quite robust, and aspects such as radar treasure hunting and memory flashbacks have stayed consistent throughout development. A significant evolution was with the ‘Story Sandbox’—the dynamic exchanges with the gods that develop as you progress through the game. This part underwent several refinements, and I’m thrilled with the result. It provides the player with an immersive sense of being part of a living story.

PS4B: Röki saw a physical release, which was fantastic. Can we expect something similar for Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island?

Alex: I absolutely loved seeing Röki get a physical release, and I’m a huge supporter of them. However, as of now, I don’t have any updates regarding a physical release for Mythwrecked. It’s definitely something I’d be keen on exploring down the line.
