Review: Cube Snake for PC

If you had a Nokia phone back in the ’90s, you probably remember Snake, that irresistible little game that kept us glued to our screens long before anyone coined the term “smartphone.” The concept was laughably simple: navigate your snake to gobble up targets, all while avoiding a collision with your own ever-lengthening tail. But as we’ve learned, simplicity can be the secret ingredient to addiction in gaming. This formula has popped up again and again over the years, and every time, it brings a delightful pang of nostalgia. That’s exactly why I’ve been diving into Cube Snake, the PC game we’re exploring today.

When it comes to picking up a new game, understanding what you expect from it is crucial. This is particularly true for Cube Snake because the fun you’ll get hinges on those expectations. At its heart, this really boils down to what you want out of your gaming experience.

Sticking to the classic formula, Cube Snake unfolds on a cube surface, where your snake slithers around, snagging up tasty treats as they pop up. The rules are as straightforward as they were in the original version: collect as many snacks as possible before the inevitable mishap with your own tail ends the round. There’s an added twist—filling up a fever bar results in a frenzied period where multiple snacks appear, and everything speeds up temporarily. The trick is handling the pressure until things simmer down, challenging you to see just how long you can last.

It’s this simplicity that makes Cube Snake so charming, and it’s why you might find yourself squeezing in a quick session whenever you have five minutes to spare. Its bite-sized nature invites the “just one more try” mentality, easily pulling you in. It’s a great fit for short gaming breaks and perfect for those score chasers out there determined to notch a bit higher each round.

I recognize that in today’s gaming landscape, we are often hungry for more complex features and diverse experiences. If you’re seeking a game with multiple levels or a trove of unlockable extras, Cube Snake might not scratch that itch. This could cost it some appeal, given that many of us, myself included, often seek more than just high scores. While the game mechanics are solid and don’t require a drastic overhaul, adding elements like a modest storyline, varied levels, or even unlockable skins might incentivize more frequent returns, offering players tangible goals beyond score chasing.

However, not having these features doesn’t mean Cube Snake isn’t worth your time. It’s very much a focused experience. And at an incredibly low price point of just £2.49, along with an introductory 10% discount, it’s hard to argue against the value it provides.

Ultimately, if you’re in the market for something straight-up addictive and quaintly uncomplicated to fill your idle moments, Cube Snake makes for a fantastic pick. It’s a refreshing, vibrant twist on a mobile classic, free from bugs and with intuitive controls. Whether you’re attracted to games you can quickly pop into or you’re likely to play for longer as the game hooks you, this game fits into the collection seamlessly. For aficionados of the original Snake, it’s a nostalgic trip you won’t want to miss. It’s absolutely commendable.

Reintroducing a beloved classic, Cube Snake easily scores a 7/10. It serves as a fun, addictive nod to a classic with enough charm, especially for those craving nostalgia, simple play, or an old-school high-score challenge. While you won’t find bells and whistles in terms of game depth, a few evolving elements could enrich the experience. Nevertheless, as it stands, it’s a great rendition of the timeless Snake and worth every penny.
